Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as polystyrene foam, has a reputation for being environmentally unfriendly. It is similar to Styrofoam and often used in packaging. However, when it comes to insulation, EPS proves to be a vital player in the fight against climate change.

EPS is a lightweight, moldable insulation material derived from styrene monomer. Despite its association with single-use consumer products, EPS has several eco-friendly properties that make it an excellent choice for insulation in buildings.

How EPS Insulation Promotes a Green Future

Carbon emissions and single-use material waste are significant contributors to our global ecological crisis. insulation addresses both issues. Energy consumption required to maintain consistent temperatures within buildings is often overlooked, yet it plays a considerable role in generating carbon emissions. There are a few ways to combat this. One method would be to look toward renewable sources of power that are carbon neutral. The other would be to cut back on the power spent maintaining habitable temperatures within buildings.

Renewable energy efforts show a lot of promise but will take time and infrastructure to fully adopt. The other solution is to cut back on the energy use for thermoregulating buildings. This can be done effectively and immediately through improving practices in securing the “building envelope”, or the systems designed to regulate temperature, air, and water exposure between the interior and exterior of a building.

This need to cut back on energy consumption is popularizing due to its low cost and high performance, outshining many other commercially available insulation materials.

Its advantages as an insulation material include:

  • Lightweight, making it easy to use in construction
  • Moisture-repelling, preventing mold and fungal growth
  • Flame-retardant when mixed with the right additives
  • Easily shapable on-site for various applications
  • Long-term R-Value (“R” is the resistance to heat flow)
  • Energy efficiency
  • Constant thermal resistance
  • Measurable energy savings
  • Strength
  • Sustainability
  • No growth of bacteria, nor will it decay over time
  • Dimensional stability
  • Low cost

These properties ensure that buildings consume less energy for heating and cooling, reducing their environmental impact significantly.

Recyclable EPS Foam

, and Europe especially has been leading the charge in reusing and producing recycled EPS foam. EPS can be easily heated, melted, and reshaped for different applications. As such, we are seeing an upsurge in foam-protected packaging restructured for future use in both shipping and insulation.

There are two main methods of producing EPS: extruded production and suspension production. Extruded production supports breaking down existing EPS material and reforming it with fresh additive beads. Recycling EPS foam through extruded production can be as effective as creating a new product. Improving the prevalence of EPS recycling will have a tremendous impact on our landfills, and our industry knows this.

We’re witnessing a global push to establish as the norm. There is no denying that EPS foam is an incredible material for protecting packaging during transit, and now we’re approaching a future where said packaging is as recyclable as the cardboard boxes it comes in.

Both extruded and suspension manufacturing require processes of nucleating agents to ensure consistent production and desirable characteristics. These additives are essential in creating the high performance necessary for construction and packaging applications.

Nucleating Agents in EPS Foam Production

The science behind nucleating agents is complex. Nucleating agents provide the sites necessary for cell formation during the course of polymerization of polystyrene. They are dispersed in the styrene monomer prior to the initiation of the polymerization reaction. This agent modifies the chemical structure of the foam, creating large and consistent cells throughout the material. This lowers the foam density and increases its sturdiness.

POLYWAX polyethylenes can yield a more narrow polymer bead size distribution, a smaller, more uniform cell structure, and improved density/thermal insulation properties of the finished expanded components. As a result, they have been the industry standard for EPS nucleation. They also provide potential improvement in mold cycle time, in mold fusion, surface appearance of the finished foam article and structural integrity. Many of these have been seen in actual commercial usage of the POLYWAX materials.

Effect on EPS Cell Structure

The photos below are of EPS beads, taken with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), at 50X magnification. Note the development of small uniform cells when POLYWAX polyethylene is used as the nucleant.

POLYWAX™ Polyethylene

There are plenty of nucleating agents on the market, but the best nucleating agent today has remained the same for the last 25 years. When we brought nucleating agents to market two and a half decades ago, we did so with a deep understanding of the science behind expanded polystyrene. We saw the potential of the material and knew what the market needed to truly succeed. That future-sighted view maintains today as we continue to evolve our business to meet the growing need for promoting recyclable EPS.

When we say polystyrene foam is not only a green material but will also be a critical player in protecting our planet for years to come, we mean it! The advanced insulation properties of EPS foam will radically cut down our energy consumption, thus lowering carbon emissions. More so, its remarkable ability to be recycled into additional EPS foam not only cuts back overproduction of the material but can go a long way in lowering the footprint of existing landfills. Imagine the impact we’d have by creating valuable housing components from those old take-out food containers and packing peanuts! This is the future we can all work towards!

Our understanding of the chemistry is unrivaled. We have in-house experts dedicated to the study of EPS formulations. So if you’re in the business of EPS production, reach out! Our specialists are some of the best researchers out there in the space. It’s how we’ve ensured our nucleating agents promote the production of higher-quality EPS than any of our competition. Check our site for more information. Alternatively, you can contact us directly and speak with an EPS specialist.

Enhancing Candle Quality with VYBAR™ Polymers Additives

Candles come in many shapes and sizes; and for as many shapes and sizes as there are, a diverse range of materials go into the candle-making process. Whether we’re discussing recreational candlemakers or industrial candle companies, the process of making candles often boils down to chemistry over craftsmanship.

This starts simply enough. The base of all candles is wax. While luxury, organic waxes exist—palm wax, soy wax and beeswax, for instance—most candles today use paraffin wax. There are a few reasons for this. First and foremost, paraffin wax is the cheapest material on the market. More importantly, the chemical properties of paraffin waxes are incredibly well-suited for candles. They boast good strength, provide consistent burn times, and boast a good compatibility with a wide range of fragrance types.

They may not burn as cleanly as other materials (you’ll notice black soot after burning), but their general characteristics have largely cemented themselves as the default for most candle makers. However, paraffin wax is just the start of this discussion.

Candle

What Are VYBAR Polymers?

VYBAR™ polymers are a tried and tested candle additive manufactured in the same location since its original inception, and currently produced by NuCera Solutions.

Paraffin wax is rarely used by itself in professional applications. Most candles mix in a VYBAR polymer candle additive: one of several types of VYBAR polymers depending on the type of candle. Generally speaking, VYBAR polymers are a type of organic polymer that builds off the good characteristics of paraffin, with a range of benefits that are nothing short of incredible.

When added to a candle, VYBAR increases:

  • Opacity
  • Fragrance Loads
  • Consistency in batches
  • Plasticity/Malleability
  • Hardness
  • Dye Dispersion
  • Surface gloss

VYBAR improves on the material properties of candle wax across the board. Increased strength enables paraffin candles to stand tall, even while burning—making essential for column candles. The added opacity and dye dispersion greatly improves a candle’s appearance. When this is coupled with the improved fragrance load, candles look and smell better; and this improvement isn’t subtle.

reduces a phenomenon called mottling in the candle. Mottling refers to the splotchy patterns (the snowflakes) that appear when wax hardens.

If you’re looking for a consistent, uniform candle surface, VYBAR polymers are a necessity. In addition to, VYBAR also:

  • Reduces cracking
  • Reduces the time to cool
  • Reduces raw material costs
  • Eliminates oil bleed
  • Eliminates surface bubbling

With all these traits in mind, VYBAR polymers are truly the secret ingredient for creating incredible, professional candles.

How to Choose the Right VYBAR Polymer

In our “benefits” list, we referenced both improved plasticity and improved hardness. How is that possible? Up to this point, we’ve been using “VYBAR” as a catch-all term. There’s more than one type of VYBAR polymer on the market. VYBAR is branded numerically. We’ve broken it down into the following table for clarity:

Innovative VYBAR™ polymers provide solutions to your paraffin candle problems, improve candle performance, and deliver value that you will recognize. VYBAR polymers are hyper-branched polyalphaolefins recognized worldwide for their ability to improve the total performance and value of candles based on paraffin waxes.

If you’re interested in learning more about VYBAR polymers for candles, reach out! Our team is more than happy to discuss the unique needs of your application. After all, when it comes to VYBAR polymers, there’s no one better to trust than the original inventors!

Understanding the Real Benefits of Biopolymers in Skincare Products

The science behind skin care is as deep and robust as the cosmetics themselves. Cosmetic chemistry utilizes cutting-edge science to continuously push for improved performance and sensory experiences in both color cosmetics and skin care products. One of these developments merges the natural properties of bio-based raw materials (plant-based materials, for instance) with the high-performance characteristics of synthetic polymers. To best exemplify how plant-based polymers are utilized in the cosmetics industry, we will look at our PERFORMA™ V biopolymers and disclose testing results that showcase their unique characteristics.

PERFORMA V-55 and PERFORMA V-150 biopolymers combine sustainable plant-based raw materials like Soybean oil (Glycine Soja) with high-performance safe-synthetic waxes. This blog will look at the advantages of using these additives and discuss a few applications that directly benefit from these biopolymers.

What is a Biopolymer?

Biopolymers are defined as materials for which at least a portion of the polymer consists of material produced by or derived from renewable raw materials. Typically, these products are classified into two types, naturally occurring biopolymers derived from living organisms/plants (like, cellulose) and synthetic biopolymers that are produced from renewable resources but require polymerization (like, PLA- polylactic acid). NuCera’s PERFORMA V-55 and V-150 are plant-based synthetic biopolymers.

These particular biopolymers are the first products of their kind to combine the skin-conditioning and moisturization benefits of Glycine Soja with the nontacky, film-forming properties of synthetic wax. They provide a non-greasy, smooth skin-feel when compared with traditional petroleum-based products. As a result, PERFORMA V-55 and V-150 biopolymers are compatible with natural and synthetic cosmetic formulas and help to bring the performance of both systems together.

How NuCera’s Solutions Biopolymers are Different

Plant-based oils are a rich source of essential omega-6 fatty acids which are known to protect and nourish the skin. By combining the sustainable plant-based properties with synthetic wax, we created a new and novel biopolymer that resulted in a new line of products with physical properties ranging from liquids to low melting solids.

Depending on the exact grade, this biopolymer may contain 50% to 100% biobased content with variable levels of polarity. By using up to 100% biobased content, these biopolymers are predominantly comprised of easily renewable materials. This creates a sustainable, green solution that competes head-to-head with traditional compounds. The benefits go beyond this. Biopolymers come with the following advantages:

  • Increased Sustainability
  • Nontoxic Formula
  • Innate Skin Conditioning Properties
  • Light and Non-Greasy Aesthetic
  • Biodegradable Solution
  • Petroleum-free Compound

Biopolymer Uses and Applications

PERFORMA™V biopolymers can be used in applications from lipsticks to hair serums. In anhydrous systems, they provide gloss even in very matte bases and help to prevent oil bleed in stick applications. In hair serum formulations, shine and smoothness are easily achieved on all hair types.

Additionally, PERFORMA™V biopolymers provide non-tacky, smoothness, softness, and moisturizing to the skin. With the blending of PERFORMA V biopolymer can replace petrolatum in lip care formulations.
